Oils/Butter

What's the best oil to cook with? A recipe I was cooking last night called for Canola oil. I thought Olive oil was the best to use? We have extra virgin olive oil but honestly I know know what the EXTRA VIRGIN even means!

Also, what's the best kind of butter or a butter want-a-be to use? Margarine, butter, Smart Balance, etc.

Anyone out there have any answers to these questions?

I like olive oil because of the taste.

There are quite a few sites on the Internet that claim that Canola is actually dangerous because it comes from genetically-altered rapeseed plants. Rapeseed oil is considered toxic to humans. I personally don't get all fired up about it and I'll sometimes use Canola oil. Truthfully, though, I don't think food cooked in Canola oil tastes as good as other oils.

Olive oil is just nicer. As for the "extra virgin" olive oil, it is what you get from the first cold press of olives, and the taste is considered superior, especially for things like salads.

Hope that helps.

Excellent! Thank you for the information. I have never heard of the issues with Canolla oil before...that's interesting. I wonder how real it is...I wonder if it's like the story you hear about bug remnants being in chocolate bars or if there's some truth to it?!?!
